MOUNT LASSEN HIKE PHOTOGRAPHS

Hi and welcome to a web site that will show you pictures and will, hopefully, make you want to visit Mount Lassen National Park. Mount Lassen is one of the most beautiful National Parks in California. It indeed, is a rare gem - absolutely beautiful and unspoiled and yet, not greatly visited. My wife and I hiked to the summit the first time on September 9, 1995. On my second hike to the summit of Mount Lassen on October 7, 2000, I went with my two friends - Larry Gilliam and Scott Roberts. We had a ball and took the following pictures!

-Larry Matthews -

This web site is broken down into two sections. Part One is our hike and Part Two are photos of the 1914/1915 eruptions!

Here I am at about the first mile mark. It's about 3 1/2 miles up to the summit, but it seems much longer as it is a very steep climb. I'm wearing my "I Climbed The Volcano At Lassen Volcanic National Park" T-Shirt that I had earned in 1995.

Here are Larry Gilliam and Scott at the same location. None of us are nearly as tired as we will be in about a mile!

Here I am at the crater area. Behind me you can see the summit with it's tower.

Here is Larry Gilliam with the tower. Not really sure what this thing is. It looks white from below but it's obviously green. That's Juniper Lake in the background.

Here's a shot of me in front of the tower. If this thing's a bathroom, the door's locked! Actually, rumor has it that it is a weather station.

Here are the three of us about to collapse on top of the summit. Yes, we are very tired and windblown! We are also very ready to be carried down now....Any volunteers?

Note: If you wish to visit the park it's beautiful in the Summer and early Fall. But if you wish to hike to the Summit you may wish to go only in September or October. There is a small "window of opportunity" when you can get to the Summit without being snowed out. Conditions change quickly at the 10,000+ foot elevation. Have a great time in the park!

PHOTOS FROM THE 1914/1915 ERUPTIONS!

May 13, 1914 - The first of 107 distinct eruptions over the following 12 month period. (Love that car!)

This is the "Hot Rock" just after it landed after the large eruption in 1915. (note that the volcano is still erupting in the background.)Today it can be found right next to the main road. You can't see the mountain from the rock now days as the forest has thickly regrown! I stood next to this rock a decade ago and felt very small! This is the East side of the mountain. Between the mountain and this rock, between 4 to 5 million feet of timber were wiped off the face of the earth.

Here is the "Hot Rock" and me in September 1994. Note how much vegetation has regrown!

May 22, 1915 - The final and most major eruption, as seen from Anderson, California. Anderson is 40 miles from the summit.
